BREAK THE RULES {3} Rutva quickly combed her hair and tied it into a ponytail. Every day she barely took ten minutes before the mirror to get ready for work. When she reached the dining table, her younger brother Rishi and her father Dinesh were eating breakfast. Her mother Shalini, placed a plate of hot chapathis and paneer gravy on the table. Trying her level best to not look up at her, Rutva ate as quickly as she could. Shalini [sternly]: What time did you come home yesterday? Rutva clucked her tongue and glanced at Rishi. He did not move his eyes from his plate of food. She was certain that he had not yet told mother about the time. He was the one who stayed awake and opened the door for her when she came home late in the night. Last night also was nothing different. Rutva [without looking up]: 11. 45 Shalini shot a piercing look at Dinesh but he concentrated on his newspaper as if their conversation had nothing to do with him. Shalini: Why didn’t you le...
BREAK THE RULES {2} Rutva [rolling her eyes]: Please explain. Partha quietly handed her a folded paper from his pocket. She quickly unfolded it and read through it. The waiter arrived and placed their drinks and pizza on the table. He picked up the mug and sipped the chilled beer. It had been more than six months since he last drank beer. He had his reasons for not drinking and even now he had reasons for drinking. The familiar bittersweet taste of beer lingered on his tongue. Rutva shook her head in shock after reading the paper for the first time. Once again she slowly read through it and looked up at him with almost moist eyes. Rutva: You made it to the Air Force ! Her voice was down to a whisper. He nodded his head. A slow smile entered her face and transformed into a hearty grin. Rutva: I can’t believe this! You did it, Puttu. At last you have achieved your dream. You have no idea how happy I am! I thought you had given up. Partha [smiling wryly]: I had g...
BREAK THE RULES {1} Rutva outstretched her arms and let out a yawn. Once again she took a look at the design and smiled in quiet satisfaction. She rolled up her design sheet and put back her design tools into the bag. She had just completed designing a villa for one of her clients. Making someone’s dream come true was the best part of being an architect. Although she was exhausted, her mind was jumping with excitement of having created a unique design. It was already late in the night and she had to wake up early every morning to reach office on time. Before going to bed, she enabled the internet connection on her smartphone and checked the WhatsApp messages that she had received. One of them caught her attention and she immediately tapped on it. Partha [23.30]: Let’s meet tomorrow. She frowned and quickly sent a reply. Rutva [00.17]: What happened? There was no reply for a couple of minutes. She was guessing the numerous reasons for the emergency behind his mess...

SHACKLED SMILE… I see out The sky is bright, Birds take flight With all their might. I sit here, Trapped in fear! Screaming in silence Losing my patience… You stand there Away from me, With this iron barrier Between us. I am shackled, You are free. Don’t rescue me, Or you will be trapped Along with me! My limbs are bruised, My throat is parched, My eyes are tired Yet I see you. Your carefree laughter Curves my swollen lips Into a painful Long forgotten smile… -          Sahana L
A Few Moments of Silence … {2} After what seemed like an eternity, the vehicles in the front began to move forward in a painfully slow pace. He was glad that at least they had started to move. Later he discovered the reason for the abrupt halt of vehicles. A huge tree had been uprooted and it took the authorities more than an hour to clear the obstruction out of the way. Without thinking further, he rode as fast as or rather as slow as the waterlogged roads let him ride. It was 11.20pm when he reached his 2BHK flat. Yet today, when he turned his key in the keyhole and opened the door, it truly felt like home. He felt a comforting warmth which gently caressed his wet body. Abhimanyu’s hopes were crashed when he saw that the lights were turned off in the house. She must be asleep. Every day I had a chance of coming early but I always chose to come late. Today I tried so much but I couldn’t make it… Instead of going into his study as usual, he slowly walked towards the...
