A Tribute to Friendship

This day means a lot to us. Or rather, it is a grim reminder of how many friends we lost in life. Friendship is like a flowing river. It connects a lot of people who choose to swim with you. Many part with us when they have to change course of their life and we end up losing a lot of them all through this journey of life. Yet we do not stop finding more people who can join us…

Thanks to Facebook and WhatsApp, which still keeps us connected. We are barely a click or a touch away from each other. Yet I still prefer personal meetings to keep my friendship going, which I know is next to impossible in our busy schedules. We have been with friends in school and college who were such a big part of our life in that phase. We could barely call it a day without spending hours talking to them. Now we may not even know where they are in this world, so digitally connected but personally disconnected. It could have been years since you met that best friend of yours who lived just down the lane in the past. Where is that girl who helped you with your homework? Do you know where that boy who kept teasing you lives now? How hard is it to eat your lunch in solitude missing those hungry hands which devoured your tiffin box?

Life goes on and so do we. There is no longer any time left to mourn for lost friendships or celebrate the arrival of new ones. The hours that we spend gazing at our laptop screens and smartphones, we are quietly letting our precious friends disappear from our lives. There will come a day when they will exist only in the contacts list which can be deleted with just a touch. Within a matter of seconds the friendship of years will vanish forever…

No matter what choices we make in life, friendship always chooses us. At any given point of time, we will still have friends around us. Although they may not be the same ones every time. We are indeed lucky if the same friends continue to swim with us through the years for a lifetime. You never know what future holds for you, treasure every moment that you spend with your friends. Even though you might meet them someday, somewhere, it is never the same as the moments you spent with them in the past. The three magical words “Keep in touch” could be the last words that you heard them tell. Let those not just be words hanging in the air, it is a promise that each one of us should at least try not to break.

Friendship will continue to flow forever and so will we continue to swim for a lifetime. We will lose and gain many friends, yet friendship will still hold that precious place in our hearts. Let us take this day as an opportunity to indulge ourselves in the warmth of the sweet memories gifted by our friends…

                     Happy Friendship Day!!!
