WOMEN ARE MORE EXPRESSIVE THAN MEN???

It was one of my usual fun-filled Deutsch class in the morning when my teacher dropped a bomb that each one of us should make a presentation on one particular topic in the class (P.S. in Deutsch!!!) Of course, she was generous enough to let us choose the topic from the list that she had made for us. I skimmed through various topic titles (around 30!) for the next five minutes. Then I settled for a very thought-provoking topic – “Frauen sind gefuhlvoller als Manner” which literally means that women are more expressive than men! My teacher was very happy with my choice because she expected a really interesting presentation from a writer.

I began my presentation by asking the class:

“In the movie Titanic, who is more expressive about one’s feelings, Jack or Rose?”

I was astonished when the majority voted for Jack! Now my topic was literally gone with the wind… it completely negated the opinion of more than half of the audience! Let me warn you that a situation like this is quite possible during any of the presentation. Fortunately I was prepared to convince my listeners that both men and women are equally expressive. If that is the case then why do we often hear the cliché that men don’t express their feelings and thoughts as much as women? Women are very communicative about their emotions because they cannot hide them for long. Often they express it in words, laughter, smile or tears. Men hardly discuss about what is running on their mind, even if it makes their life so stressful. Yet famous writers like William Shakespeare, Kalidas, Kuvempu or artists like Raja Ravi Verma, Leonardo Da Vinci and many more belong to the masculine gender. There can be no second thoughts in declaring that they have done a commendable job in portraying various emotions in their works. If we take into consideration the many successful actors in the world, then this list will be endless! Yet men don’t qualify to be expressive humans. Why??

I think the answer is that women speak about their feelings but men simply express them through simple actions which mostly go unnoticed. When a man holds your hand or kisses your forehead or cuddles his child or simply wordlessly gazes at you or shifts a little on the couch so that you can rest your head on his shoulder more comfortably, he is expressing his feelings. It’s just that we don’t see the emotion behind his actions. This is his way of communicating his emotions. Therefore the next time, think twice before you complain about men being non-expressive. It could also mean that you may not be paying much attention to his subtle actions.

By this time, I was almost on the brink of being successful in convincing my audience. Nevertheless the conclusion should be more effective! In any relationship, when you love and understand the other person, there is no need to go out of the way to show your feelings. Both of you will simply experience the emotions of each other even if they are not expressed! All you need is some patience and a few moments of silence…

    1. I think there are many who do that, but once you start understanding the man its not difficult to see the emotions behind his actions :)
